Libya’s desert area in famous for its size as it represents a
large part of the great desert.
Its strategic location as the crossroads of old caravans,
between equatorial areas in the south and the mild areas in
north , as well as its proximity to the Nile river, Eastern
Africa and Mediterranean civilizations, has had a significant
cultural and humanistic effect on the area.

Historical
and
Cultural Tourist Attraction
of Libyan Desert
The
human settlements in these areas go back to
pre-historic times, evident by inscriptions
drawings found on rocks and in caves in the
mountains and valleys, as well as the man made
handicraft tools used to fight wild animals and
in hunting.
The remains of old
cities and villages also provide evidence that
several great civilizations once existed all
over this now rather silent desert area.
|
Such
civilizations included the Germent and Roman
civilizations as well as the Arab Islamic
civilization which now extends over vast areas
of Libya’s desert.
All these
historical arts , archaeological sites, oases
and similar artificial and natural sites
represent a great and valuable treasury and an
economic source of income in south libya in the
form of tourism.
Such treasures
including the rock formations in the Akukus
Mountains and Ghadames city have been declared
as protected historical sites by UNESCO.
