Libya’s desert area in famous for its size as it represents a large part of the great desert.
Its strategic location as the crossroads of old  caravans, between equatorial areas in the south and the mild areas in north , as well as its proximity to the Nile river, Eastern Africa and Mediterranean  civilizations, has had a significant cultural and humanistic effect on the area.

The human settlements in these areas go back to pre-historic  times, evident by inscriptions drawings found on rocks and in caves in the mountains and valleys, as well as the man made handicraft tools used to fight wild animals and in hunting.

Such civilizations  included the Germent and Roman civilizations as well as the Arab Islamic civilization which now extends over vast areas of Libya’s desert.
All these historical arts , archaeological sites, oases and similar artificial  and natural sites represent a great and valuable treasury  and an economic source of income in south libya in the form of tourism.
Such treasures  including the rock formations in the Akukus Mountains  and Ghadames city have been declared as protected historical sites by UNESCO.
